“For things at a common destination there is a common path.  Not always easy to see.  But there.” 

The path which brought Matthew Geary to Carbon Fest didn’t start with his Carbon Records debut EP “Dushore Dying” in February of ‘26, or by the release of his full length album “Owl’s Lament” on Scissor Tail Records just one month later.  Some could say the path began in the winter of 2005 when he saw Jack Rose open for Sunn at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia.  Leaving him in awe at what one man did with a guitar and leaving him confused when the headliner had no drum set.  A young man exposed to drone before the internet was what it is today.  With age comes wisdom and with that wisdom came a mission. 

From 2005 on Matthew would attend metal, punk, and hardcore shows in Philadelphia and the surrounding areas and would play in various bands throughout the years.  What had never left him was the night he saw Jack at the church.  Even at a young age he knew that Jack’s music pointed to something, but he couldn’t name what it was.  Then in 2023 he committed fully to the art of American Primitive guitar playing with a relentless and uncompromising practice regimen.  A new born Luddite who’s turned his back on the world in hope of finding forever.  

To pigeonhole what Matthew is trying to create into a single genre would be an injustice.  After all names and labels have their utility in helping us understand the world around us but are ultimately restrictive and limiting.  Bearing the torch of those who came before him with deep reverence Matthew is less concerned with his hero’s ability on a corporeal level but is more concerned with what their art pointed to.  The Incorporeal.  That which cannot be named.  That which cannot be lost.
